Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City PLAYER RATINGS: David Silva shines in the derby while Romelu Lukaku goes missing... again
- Manchester United were brushed aside by rivals Manchester City on Sunday
- Pep Guardiola's side moved 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League
- David Silva and Nicolas Otamendi scored either side of half time to earn the win
- Marcus Rashford's equaliser for Silva's opener wasn't enough for United
An unlikely hero in Nicolas Otamendi ensured derby day glory would go to Manchester City as they edged Manchester United to a 2-1 victory on Sunday.
David Silva opened the scoring, which was met by Marcus Rashford's immediate response on half time, but it could have easily been more were it not for David De Gea's stubbornness in the United goal late on as City moved 11 points clear.
Sportsmail's JACK GAUGHAN was at Old Trafford to give all the match ratings from an exciting Manchester derby.
David Silva opened the scoring for Manchester City a matter of minutes before half time
MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1)
David De Gea - 7
Made two stunning saves and could do nothing about either City goal. Always available.
Antonio Valencia - 6.5
Will have wanted more of the ball. Wasn't utilised nearly enough. Defended resolutely.
Chris Smalling - 6
Dealt with individual situations. Not given much help by those in front of him.
Marcos Rojo - 6
Staggering he continued after a clash of heads with David Silva and was forced off at half-time.
Ashley Young - 6
Caught under the ball in the build-up to the opener and squared up by Leroy Sane on occasion.
Ander Herrera was lost in the 2-1 defeat as the City midfield tormented him throughout
Ander Herrera - 5
Looked completely lost. Didn't know when to press the ball and deservedly booked for diving.
Nemanja Matic - 6.5
Certainly stronger than his central midfield partner and tracked runners more effectively.
Anthony Martial - 6.5
United were much improved once Martial switched to the left; the change immediately gave them more impetus.
Jesse Lingard - 7
A very industrious display and managed to find more pockets of space as it wore on.
Marcus Rashford equalised for Manchester United moments after Silva's opener
Marcus Rashford - 6.5
Razor sharp in front of goal to capitalise on defensive mistakes. Did go missing for spells.
Romelu Lukaku - 4
Will remember this derby for two calamitous contributions in his own box. Big late miss as well.
Romelu Lukaku will remember this derby for all the wrong reasons after another poor display
Manchester United Subs
Victor Lindelof (for Rojo, 46) - 6.5
Solid again, which will be a source of encouragement for United.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (for Lingard, 76)
A throw of the dice by Mourinho in search of an equaliser.
Juan Mata (for Herrera, 82)
An extra attack-minded player on.
Manager: Jose Mourinho - 5.5
United didn't go for it early enough and sat back too deep.
United boss Jose Mourinho struck a continuously frustrated figure on the touchline
MANCHESTER CITY (4-3-3)
Ederson - 7
The calmest man around, taking passes thumped in his direction, and a super late double save.
Kyle Walker - 7
An early yellow card hampered the right back. Probably wasn't attacked enough by United.
Vincent Kompany - 6
Didn't look truly comfortable on the ball. Dealt with Lukaku and substituted at half-time.
Nicolas Otamendi was the unlikely saviour after he scored the winner in the second half
Nicolas Otamendi - 7
Culpable for Rashford's equaliser, missing a routine header, but otherwise impressive and a goalscorer.
Fabian Delph - 5.5
Nerviest he's been at left back and caught flat-footed after Otamendi's mistake.
Fernandinho - 7
City were not often stretched and much of that was down to the Brazilian's positional play.
Kevin De Bruyne - 6.5
It cannot always be the best from De Bruyne. Still remained very incisive at times though.
Silva was pulling the strings at Old Trafford and was rewarded with City's opening goal
David Silva - 7.5
Ended up as a false nine and he showed a poacher's instinct to volley in the first. Niggled too.
Raheem Sterling - 6
On his heels too often, particularly when not reacting to Ilkay Gundogan's centre at 2-1.
Gabriel Jesus - 6.5
Lacked that usual spark - and guilty of diving in the first half - although held the ball well.
Raheem Sterling will celebrate despite an unusually quiet display from the winger
Leroy Sane - 6.5
Seemed more dangerous against Young. Asked to perform a different role; not as forward-facing.
Manchester City Subs
Ilkay Gundogan (for Kompany, 46) - 7
One of his better days. Enjoyed driving forward.
Eliaquim Mangala (for Jesus, 59) - 6.5
Stuck to the basics and did them well enough.
Bernado Silva (for Sane, 88)
Running the clock down.
Manager: Pep Guardiola - 7
Had to shuffle his pack but City never lost their grip on it.
Referee: Michael Oliver - 7
Kept control of the game and got the big calls correct.
Attendance: 74,847
Pep Guardiola was the master of the Manchester derby after his shuffled pack came out on top
