Michael Owen's Bentley GT Continental snowed in as cold snap hits Northrop home: 'Thought I was clever sheltering my car'

  • Michael Owen's home in Northrop was hit by heavy snowfall over the weekend
  • The former England striker thought he would shelter his car under a tree
  • The plan backfired and Owen was left to dig his Bentley GT Continental out

Michael Owen was one of many across the UK waking up on Monday morning facing the prospect of digging their car out of the snow.

The former England and Liverpool striker was up early to catch a train and thought he had protected his Bentley GT Continental against the conditions by parking under a tree at his Flintshire home.

However, Owen awoke to find the £150,000 car had fallen foul of the weather after a protective branch had collapsed under the weight of the snow.

Owen tweeted a picture of his car alongside the caption: 'Not ideal at 5:30am when you’ve got a train to catch! Thought I was clever sheltering my car from the snow!'

The pundit and wannabe jockey did make his train to London as he headed south to work on BT Sport's coverage of the Champions League last 16 draw.

He tweeted: 'Heading down to Stratford on the train giggling to myself. Champions League draw for the knockout stage'.

Wintry conditions had blasted north Wales this weekend, causing problems on the roads and leading to a number of events being cancelled or postponed.

The Flintshire area where Owen lives was particularly badly hit as blankets of heavy snow fell.

Owen was luckier than some of his other BT Sport colleagues over the weekend

Some of Owen's BT Sport colleagues were less lucky. Owen Hargreaves and Martin Keown were the scheduled pundits for Southampton vs Arsenal on Sunday but were not able to make it to St Mary's for the broadcast.

Host Jake Humphrey revealed the travel problems faced by the team on Twitter: 'Martin Keown who can’t get off the M40, Owen Hargreaves who is stuck on the M25, Graham Poll who is snowed in at home'.

Saints great Francis Benali was required to dash between the gantry and the studio as he filled in as colour commentator and provided analysis.
