David Moyes will consider offering Jack Wilshere an escape route from Arsenal in January.

The Scot is looking at the transfer window in consultation with West Ham’s director of recruitment Tony Henry and the chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold as they plot a way to avoid relegation.

Wilshere, 25, is yet to agree an extension on his current Arsenal contract which is set to expire in June and has barely played in the Premier League for Arsene Wenger this season.

England manager Gareth Southgate, who has omitted the midfielder from his recent squads, has warned Wilshere that he must get more game-time in the league if he wants any chance of making the national team squad for the Russia World Cup.

Wenger is not interested in loaning the player to another top-flight club to see out the remainder of his contract elsewhere, with Arsenal competing on four fronts during the second half of the season, but could be tempted to cash in rather than lose him on a free transfer if they do not extend his stay.

‘I think Jack Wilshere would be someone who we’d have to look at if he was available,’ Moyes said, ahead of facing Arsenal on Wednesday.

‘I also want to make sure we’re looking at players who’ve got time and who can be at the club for a long period and not just in for a short period. Then there’s also the short-term fix for me which is: how do we get enough wins between now and the end of the season? There’s a balance between that.

'That’s why those decisions will have to be mutually taken with Tony Henry, the chairmen and myself to make the right deals.’

Wilshere fits the type of player Moyes is seeking to strike that balance. Moyes revealed on Tuesday that he’d had Aaron Ramsey and his parents round his house and was tying to convince the midfielder to join former club Everton from Cardiff back in 2008, but was beaten to his signature by Wenger.

But with a contract only running until the end of the season, Moyes is instead searching for more established recruits right now rather than youngsters with great potential.

‘We need somebody who can hit the ground running,’ he said. ‘I don’t know if that’s easier said than done. But you would hope if you took a player from another Premier League club he would be able to go right into the team and play well.’
