Wayne Rooney believes the Manchester United team of 2008 was the best in Premier League history and says Man City must win trophies on a consistent basis to match them.

Pep Guardiola's men are sweeping all before them and, after sealing a 16th consecutive victory in a dominant 4-1 win over Tottenham on Saturday, are already being hailed in some quarters as the best team to ever grace the Premier League.

But Rooney was quick to underline the fact that, for all of their razzmatazz, they are yet to win a single piece of silverware under Guardiola and does not believe they will maintain their current level of performance throughout the campaign.

He told talkSPORT: 'I'm not sure they are quite there. They would have to keep going and do a lot more. I would go with the United team from 2008.

'There are so many great teams throughout the years in the Premier League. This City team need to win trophies and do it for a longer period to be in that bracket.

'Pep Guardiola deserves so much credit. The way he has got City playing in incredible. But I don't think they can go unbeaten all season.

'There are five or six teams that can all beat each other — and I'm sure in one of those City will get beaten.'

The former England captain was part of the Sir Alex Ferguson side that picked up a Champions League and Premier League double.

Manchester United pipped Chelsea to retain their Premier League title by two points (87 points to 85) and also beat their rivals on penalties in the Champions League final in Moscow.

Between 2007 and 2011, they won the Premier League four out of a possible five times. It is that team, which also included Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, that Rooney believes stands out as the best since the Premier League's inception.
