Arsenal 1-0 West Ham - FIVE THINGS WE LEARNED: More empty seats at the Emirates Stadium while Domingos Quina is handed baptism of fire by David Moyes amid transfer interest

  • Arsenal are into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup with a 1-0 win over West Ham
  • There were around 15,000 empty seats at the Emirates Stadium though
  • Manuel Lanzini started a two-match ban for a retrospective diving charge
  • Jack Wilshere's absence means he will be in contention to face Liverpool
  • Domingos Quina was handed his full West Ham debut amid transfer interest

Arsenal booked their place in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup with a 1-0 win over West Ham at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

Danny Welbeck scored the only goal of the game as he fired home from close range just three minutes before half-time.

Here, Sportsmail's Sami Mokbel highlights five things we learned from the game.

Empty seats at the Emirates once again

It may have been a cup quarter-final and a London derby but there were swathes of empty seats at the Emirates Stadium. Large sections of the upper tier were empty, with around 45,000 inside the 60,000 capacity stadium — and 7,000 of those were West Ham fans.

It is worth pointing out, however, that Islington Council refused Arsenal’s request to make tickets available on general sale amid segregation concerns. On top of that, the game was not included on Arsenal season tickets.

Manuel Lanzini pays the price for diving

Manuel Lanzini started a two-match ban after his appeal against a retrospective diving charge was rejected by the FA. The West Ham star will also miss Saturday’s Premier League game against Newcastle.

Jack Wilshere's absence bodes well for Friday night chances

Jack Wilshere was conspicuous by his absence. So far the Carabao Cup and Europa League have been the midfielder’s domain. But Wilshere’s reintegration into Wenger’s starting XI over the past fortnight has provided the 25-year-old with hope that he has a long-term future at the Emirates.

His omission indicates Wilshere will face Liverpool on Friday night, which would be his third straight Premier League start.

Domingos Quina given chance to shine

Domingos Quina was handed his full West Ham debut — a baptism of fire for the highly-rated Portugal Under 20 midfielder. It remains to be seen, however, whether we’ll see Quina in a Hammers shirt again.

West Ham will consider offers for the 18-year-old in January with his chances of regular football under David Moyes slim, given the club’s relegation battle. Liverpool are keen on taking the teenager, though any move is likely to see Quina immediately sent out on loan.

Andy Carroll's timely return for David Moyes

Andy Carroll was fit enough to take his place on the bench after recovering from a knee injury. The striker returned to first-team training this week and came on in the 65th minute. It is a huge boost for Moyes, who moaned his squad was down to the ‘bare bones’ on Monday.
