Pep Guardiola shushes the referee before conducting the victorious Manchester City fans while Kyle Walker and Leroy Sane fight over a hot water bottle - EIGHT THINGS YOU MISSED from the Carabao Cup

  • Pep Guardiola reacted furiously to eight minutes of added time at Leicester
  • He also wasn't happy at the awarding of a stoppage time penalty for home side
  • Kyle Walker and Leroy Sane tried to keep warm as they sat on the bench

Manchester City required penalties to reach the Carabao Cup semi finals on Tuesday night after Claudio Bravo's decisive save ensured they joined Arsenal in the final four.

Pep Guardiola's side were leading until deep into the eight minutes of stoppage time awarded before Jamie Vardy converted a controversially-awarded penalty.

City had too much in the shootout as they kept up their quest for a quadruple. Here Sportsmail take a look at some of things you may have missed beyond the obvious...

Pep Guardiola has made it a habit of his in recent weeks to march onto the pitch at the final whistle and gesticulate wildly.

Recently it was Southampton winger Nathan Redmond who bore the brunt of the animated Manchester City manager.

On Tuesday it was referee Bobby Madley who the Spaniard made a beeline for at full time.

But you don't imagine he was telling the referee how good he is at officiating and how he did brilliantly to let the game flow.

Judging by the look in his eye and the wagging finger, it's unlikely. And when you see the replay of Demarai Gray hitting the floor under Kyle Walker's challenge in second-half stoppage time, you'd be inclined to agree.

Jamie Vardy's equaliser from the spot angered Guardiola even further, after he had sarcastically asked the fourth official to add more than the eight minutes of stoppage time that was awarded.

Guardiola's sour mood soon changed when Claudio Bravo saved from Riyad Mahrez and sent City into the last four of the Carabao Cup.

This time he charged onto the pitch in a much less vindictive manner, running over to embrace his players one by one.

But he saved his best for the traveling fans, attempt to orchestrate their celebrations in the stands as City's run in the competiton went on.

It was certainly a busy night for Guardiola on the touchline as he watched his young side book their place in the semi finals.

The City boss was his usual animated self, and clearly that got a bit too much for one supporter who decided to run down to his technical area.

As he stood just a few paces away from the Spaniard, he was wrestled to the ground by two members of security.

Guardiola looked a tad unimpressed, and perhaps mystified by the pitch invader's intentions, as he was escorted out of the technical area.

Mascots put rivalry behind them at the Emirates

West Ham's mascot made the inexplicable trip to north London for the clash with Arsenal

Clubs often take a large contingent with them when they travel away from home - ranging from players to backroom staff and everything in between.

But it was somewhat surprising to see West Ham's mascot as part of the travelling party in north London on Tuesday night.

Hammerhead posed for a picture with Arsenal's very own Gunnersaurus ahead of the match at the Emirates Stadium.

And the Arsenal mascot even took to Twitter to share the post with his followers, calling the West Ham man his 'new friend'.

Plenty of empty seats at the Emirates

Despite the prospect of a London derby in the quarter-final of a cup competition, the Emirates was far from full on Tuesday night.

Only 44,741 turned up to watch Arsenal host West Ham. But it was nothing to do with the crowded Christmas schedule or general disinterest in the Carabao Cup.

In fact it was crowd safety rules which prevented tickets going on general sale for the match. Islington Council imposed a limit following crowd trouble during the Europa League clash with Cologne in September.

The Carabao Cup was not included in the season ticket package, meaning holders had to purchase tickets. The official attendance, therefore, came in at 44,741 - instead of the usual tally near the 60,000 mark.

Michy Batshuayi made headlines earlier this month when he kept himself warm on the bench by holding a hot water bottle next to his face.

The Belgian took a bit of stick as he fought the freezing temperatures during Chelsea's defeat by West Ham at the London Stadium.

On Tuesday night it was the turn of Kyle Walker to take centre stage as he battled the chilly conditions in the midlands.

And as he walked up to the away bench at the King Power Stadium, Leroy Sane looked more than a little jealous of his team-mate's quick thinking.

As Walker went to take his seat, Sane jokingly tried to take the warming appliance out his hands. The England man was having none of it. At least Sane took it in good humour.

Welbeck ends League Cup drought

Danny Welbeck ended his eight-year League Cup drought with Arsenal's winner on Tuesday

It's been a quiet season for Danny Welbeck, with first-team chances at a premium.

Arsene Wenger has used the Europa League and the Carabao Cup to field a shadow side, giving his first eleven the chance to be fresher for Premier League fixtures.

Welbeck has been one of those to see opportunities at a premium, but he grabbed it with both hands on Tuesday night to send Arsenal into the semi-finals.

His first-half goal was actually his first in the League Cup for eight years - since October 2009, when he scored for Manchester United against Barnsley.

His winning strike ended a run of 11 games without a goal in the competition.

The big clubs ring the changes - even Leicester!

With the festive fixture pile-up in full swing as we approach Christmas, it was the Carabao Cup which bore the brunt.

All four Premier League sides in action on Tuesday night rang the changes amid the busiest time of the football calendar.

NUMBER OF CHANGES

Arsenal – 11

Manchester City – 9

Leicester - 7

West Ham – 6

And though it was understandable for Arsenal, who made 11 changes as they chase bigger priorities - with Liverpool at home awaiting them on Friday - and Manchester City, who made nine, for West Ham and Leicester it was a little puzzling.

David Moyes made six changes as he took his rejuvenated side to the Emirates Stadium, while Claude Puel made seven alterations to his Leicester side.

With the Foxes safely ensconced in the top-half of the Premier League and secure in their position, it puzzled many - inclduing Gary Lineker - to see the Frenchman abandon his best chance of bringing silverware back to the midlands.

That Pep Guardiola had made nine changes to his starting lineup further underlined how curious a selection it was, with the second-half introductions of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez pivotal in taking the game to extra time.
