Sam Allardyce has backed Wayne Rooney to continue producing at the highest level over the next few years.

Rooney is Everton's leading goalscorer this campaign after scoring his 11th goal against Swansea on Monday night.

Despite missing from the penalty spot in the first half, he scored another from 12 yards to secure a 3-1 victory for the Toffees.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted the rebound from Rooney's missed spot-kick and the 32-year-old also provided the assist for Gylfi Sigurdsson's goal.

The win saw the Toffees move up to ninth in the league table.

And Allardyce insists Rooney can continue to thrive for the club in future seasons.

'Wayne can flourish as long as he wants with the talent he has got,' he told Evertontv. 'As long as he looks after his body, better than he has ever done in his life now that he is in his 30s, then he can keep going at this level.

'He has the experience and the talent to go on for a good few years yet.

'Wayne will be giving Dom a pat on the back won't he, because who knows what might have happened had he not followed up and tucked in that goal off the penalty.

'But it showed everyone what Wayne is about, having the nerve to step up and take the second one. He tucked that one away really well. It was another goal for him and that takes him into double figures.'

Rooney's second-half goal took him into double figures for the season for the first time in the league since 2014.

It is the 12th time in his career he has reached at least 10 Premier League goals in a campaign.

The last time he reached that feat before Christmas he went on to score 27 goals.

Rooney was awarded the Premier League November goal of the month trophy for his sensational long-range strike from his own half against West Ham, which secured his hat-trick.
