Manchester United in line to receive £1million from Crystal Palace if they return loanee Timothy Fosu-Mensah

  • Crystal Palace have used their allowance of two Premier League loans
  • They have got Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek on loan
  • It means they cannot follow up interest in other loan targets like Danny Ings
  • Fosu-Mensah is likeliest to be released but there is a £1m break clause in deal

Manchester United will be in line for a £1million 'penalty payment' if Crystal Palace decide to return defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah to Old Trafford early in order to free up space for another Premier League loan.

Roy Hodgson's January transfer plans have been complicated by Palace using their maximum allowance of two PL loans in season-long deals for Fosu-Mensah and Chelsea's Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

It means Palace can't follow up interest in other domestic loan targets like Liverpool forward Danny Ings unless a vacancy is created with Fosu-Mensah the likeliest candidate having started only five of Hodgson's 16 league games in charge.

That outcome would lead to a windfall for United with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward insisting on a seven-figure break clause when Fosu-Mensah joined Palace last summer when Frank de Boer was in charge.

The 19-year-old Dutch international can play at right-back or in the central of defence but has found himself behind Joel Ward, Martin Kelly, James Tomkins, Scott Dann and Mamadou Sakho in the pecking order at Selhurst Park.

Palace face Premier League leaders Manchester City on Sunday. They have been heavily linked a number of goalkeepers in the January transfer window including Ipswich's Bartosz Bialkowski.
