That last gasp victory for Liverpool puts the pressure on their old rivals Manchester United, as the two sides are now only separated by goal difference in the Premier League table.

In fact should Everton win by three goals this evening against the Red Devils, Liverpool could still end New Year's Day above Jose Mourinho's team.

From Sportsmail's Chris Wheeler at the bet365 Stadium

'Chants of ‘Hughes out’ at the final whistle form the Stoke fans as the Newcastle supporters sing ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’. Difficult times for Hughes. The gamble backfired.'

Meanwhile at Turf Moor Liverpool go close to killing the game off as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is denied by a fabulous Nick Pope stop.

16:42
Leicester City 2-0 Huddersfield Town

No signs of a comeback at the King Power Stadium, instead Leicester should have the game wrapped up only for a Wilfried Ndidi header to clatter off the crossbar.

16:41
From Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein at the King Power Stadium

'Slimani didn't show much outward emotion after scoring his goal but his team-mates were clearly delighted for him. It's been a decent showing from the big man in Vardy's absence.'

16:40
Stoke City 0-1 Newcastle United

It's coming what looks like far too late for Stoke but the home side are getting on top as Karl Darlow makes a magnificent save to deny Mame Diouf from close range.

Islam Slimani doubled Leicester City's lead with a deft chip
16:26
From Sportsmail's Chris Wheeler at the bet365 Stadium

'The wind is sheeting down at Stoke now and it’s probably for the best that Xherdan Shaqiri is off the pitch.

'The Swiss star upset his own fans by pulling out of a tackle and was then jeered for not chasing a pass from Eric Choupo-Moting.

'Mark Hughes promptly summoned Mame Diouf from the bench and took Shaqiri off.'

Riyad Mahrez's volley opens the scoring for Leicester City
16:13

'Mahrez's volley for Leicester was technically brilliant - and entirely out of keeping with the rest of the game. Well done him. The game might open up now.'

16:10
GOAL! LEICESTER CITY 1-0 Huddersfield Town

WE HAVE A GOAL! And it's worth waiting for as Riyad Mahrez finishes well following a Marc Albrighton cross.

Improvements from Stoke City after the break. Karl Darlow palms away a Charlie Adam cross, with the Potters midfielder's second cross just evading Peter Crouch.

16:06
Leicester City 0-0 Huddersfield Town

No changes from any of the 3pms at the break, but there was one in the first half at the King Power Stadium. The injured Wes Morgan having departed in the 28th minute to be replaced by Aleksandar Dragovic.

'Leicester won the league with some of the finest counter-attacking play this country has seen.

'Put an organised and determined team of underdogs in front of them and they struggle.

'The only shot on target for either team in the first half came from the visitors in the opening minute.'

15:56
From Sportsmail's Chris Wheeler at the Bet365 Stadium

'A decent enough first half at the Bet365 Stadium but Stoke will have to be creative in the second period if Hughes’s gamble is going to pay off.'

It felt like just Newcastle who had any interest in at least trying to score this afternoon, but Burnley go close to breaking the deadlock.

15:39
From Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein at the King Power Stadium

'So far, what's happened at Leicester is not a great advert for playing a load of games over Christmas and New Year. The 23 players who have participated have barely conjured up a decent move between them.'

15:37
From Sportsmail's Chris Wheeler at the bet365 Stadium

'You won’t see many worse misses than Ciaran Clark’s in the rest of 2018. The Newcastle defender had ghosted behind Kurt Zouma when a corner was flicked on to his feet two yards out.

'A first-time effort was that of a centre-back, steered over the bar when it was harder to miss. Fairly even game so far but Newcastle have had the better chances.'

15:34
From Sportsmail's Dominic King at Turf Moor

'Imagine the scene: incessant rain sweeping in off the moors, a swirling wind; a crowd that is feeling the effects of the night before and two teams feeling the impact of two games in 48 hours.

'There, in a nutshell, is your first half. We are yet to have a meaningful shot at goal.'

Liverpool's Dominic Solanke is tackled by Burnley's Phil Bardsley at Turf Moor
15:32
Stoke City 0-0 Newcastle United

How many more chances are Newcastle going to miss? Ayoze Perez nods on a Matt Ritchie corner only for Ciaran Clark to turn it over the bar from just three yards out.

15:26
From Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein at the King Power Stadium

'Jamie Vardy's young son is clearly already a good judge. He's started to cry in protest at the action in front of him leaving the England striker holding the baby, literally, and seeking the warmth of a corporate box.

'To liven things up, the lesser-spotted Adrien Silva has started to warm up to great applause.'

Leicester City's Riyad Mahrez and Huddersfield Town's Christopher Schindler battle for the ball
15:24
From Sportsmail's Dominic King at Turf Moor

'Adam Lallana has finally got his season up and running and he will have been glad to see the back of 2017, given his injury issues.

'He has started this game with enthusiasm and has just made a brilliant tackle on Johann Berg Gudmundsson to stop the Burnley midfielder streaking through on goal.'

15:22
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool have looked comfortable but a little blunt in attack so far. Adam Lallana does well to feed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the left, with the midfielder cutting inside before forcing Nick Pope into a decent save from just over 20 yards out.

15:16
Stoke City 0-0 Newcastle United

I don't know what Christian Atsu got for Christmas, but I know what he didn't get - shooting boots.

The Toon winger has yet another chance to open the scoring after getting on the end of a DeAndre Yedlin cross only to fire straight at Jack Butland from six yards out.

Stoke City's Kurt Zouma (left) closes down Newcastle United's Christian Atsu
15:14
Stoke City 0-0 Newcastle United

Stoke's choice to rest all all their key players against Chelsea isn't showing much sign of paying off so far.

Newcastle have started the better team and have a good chance to open the scoring as Christian Atsu collects a cut-back on the edge of the box before curling wide of the post. Must do better though.

15:10
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool

Still looking for our first Premier League goal. Burnley nearly get it through Ashley Barnes but the forward fires just over the bar from inside the Liverpool box.

Burnley's Phil Bardsley (left) heads clear from a Liverpool attack at Turf Moor
15:07
From Sportsmail's Chris Wheeler at the bet365 Stadium

'Will Mark Hughes’s gamble pay off after he fielded a weakened Stoke team at Chelsea two days ago and lost 5-0 in the hope of picking up a win against Newcastle today?

'The Welshman had better hope so. Rafael Benitez is hardly going for broke 48 hours after a disappointing home draw against Brighton with Dwight Gayle, Joselu and Mikel Merino on the bench. Ayoze Perez and Christian Atsu start up front.'

15:06
From Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein at the King Power Stadium

'Islam Slimani in heated discussion with international team-mate Riyad Mahrez as we get underway at the King Power. Big game for the Algerian striker in Vardy's absence.'

15:05
Stoke City 0-0 Newcastle United

No early chances, but a couple of tone setting challenges in the Potteries as Peter Crouch catches Ciaran Clark with a trailing arm while Charlie Adam is rather robust with a tackle on Jacob Murphy.

'Surprise team news is Adrien Silva is on the bench for Leicester. The club received international transfer clearance after midnight and the Premier League have cleared him to play.
