Newcastle outcast Henri Saivet in talks over Montpellier loan move with a view to making permanent £4m transfer

  • Henri Saivet has been part of Rafa Benitez's Newcastle squad this season
  • But he has appeared only occasionally and is in talks over Montpellier loan
  • French club want him on loan before potentially signing him for £4million

Newcastle midfielder Henri Saivet is in talks over a loan move to Montpellier with a view to making the deal permanent for £4million.

Saivet, 27, spent last season on loan in France at Saint-Etienne but has been part of Rafa Benitez's squad this season, albeit only appearing occasionally.

Montpellier are now trying to negotiate a move that would see him spend the second half of the season with them before a longer, permanent stint.

Newcastle splashed £5.5m on the Senegal midfielder two years ago but he has made just seven first-team appearances since.

Saivet scored in the 3-2 win at West Ham in the Premier League last month as Benitez tried to cope with an injury crisis but has fallen out of the picture again since.

He came on as an 81st minute substitute in the 3-1 FA Cup win against Luton Town in a much-changed team and is not high in Benitez's first-team reckoning.

Should he depart St James' Park, he will be leaving a side with the threat of relegation — they are just three points above the drop zone.
