Paul Scholes is under consideration, while Mike Phelan, Manchester United No 2 under Sir Alex Ferguson, and Nicky Butt, currently United’s academy head, have also been linked.

Giggs has held talks with Osian Roberts, who said there are ‘no sticking points’ between them. Roberts is the Welsh FA's technical director and assisted Chris Coleman.

‘We're continuing to have dialogue and we'll see what happens as we continue to discuss things,’ Roberts told the BBC.

‘The important thing is that Ryan has 100 per cent commitment and trust from the staff that he has working for him. He must feel that as a manager.’
