IN THE MARKET: Jose Mourinho confirmed Chelsea would be in the market for a new striker [GETTY]

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa is known to be a top target for the Blues, who have struggled for goals from their strikers this term.

Samuel Eto'o has scored 14 goals, Fernando Torres 10 and Demba Ba eight, while Luis Suarez has netted 30 alone for Liverpool despite missing the start of the season while completing a biting ban and not having European matches to augment his tally.

Costa on the other hand has netted 36 and assisted seven in all competitions, making his an ideal candiate for Mourinho in the summer.

"Our strikers are good strikers, but they are players with some specific qualities," Mourinho said.

"They are not the kind of players who in five square metres - with three or four players around - can get the ball, dribble on, see the space and shoot.

"So when the team is in a difficult situation they are not able to, normally, resolve the situation for us."

Mourinho confirmed on Friday that Chelsea would be back in the market for a striker this summer, but wouldn't be going on a spending spree.

"Chelsea will be quite quiet in summer," Mourinho said.

"We are going to do some critical signings.

"A striker? Yes.

"We have some basis for the improvement of next season, and we need that.

Chelsea inability to kill off games ha caused their campaign for the Premier League title to stumble, with the stalemate against relegation-threatened Norwich following draws in 2014 against West Ham and West Brom.

Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Sunderland have also managed to beat the 2005, 2006 and 2010 league champions.
