EYES ON THE PRIZE: Cesc Fabregas is targeting Champions League success with Chelsea [GETTY]

The Spain midfield star has been a pivotal reason behind Chelsea's unbeaten start to the season and has struck up a superb understanding with fellow new recruit Diego Costa at Stamford Bridge.

Fabregas, a £30m summer acquisition from Barcelona, wants to take advantage of the Blues' blistering start in domestic and European competition.

Having come close to winning Europe's biggest prize with both Barca and Arsenal, the 27-year-old admits it would mean everything to him to capture it with Chelsea.

"It is important, the Champions League is the competition I still need to win," said Fabregas ahead of tomorrow night's Group G clash with Maribor in Slovenia.

"It would give me enormous satisfaction. We have a great team. I do not know if it will happen this year, next year or in the next five years. That is football."

Blues boss Jose Mourinho also hailed the influence of Fabregas and cited his battling qualities that often get overlooked.

"There are not many here because the Premier League needs other qualities too," Mourinho told Chelsea TV.

"If you are just that type of intelligent, technical player but you don't have the quality to compete and win first and second balls then to be intense is very difficult.

"There are not many players like this and that is why when we felt the chance to have Cesc Fabregas, we thought the player could give us important things.

"But at the same time give us what the Premier League needs, because in the Premier League it is difficult to play when you are not aggressive and you don't have good positional play."

Chelsea will clinch qualification from the group phase if they defeat Maribor and Sporting Lisbon fail to beat Schalke.
