The Reds skipper is off to MLS side LA Galaxy in the summer after deciding to call time on his Anfield career.

And speaking after last night's clash between his Chelsea side and Gerrard's Liverpool at Anfield, Mourinho admitted the Premier League will be worse off without the former England captain.

"I'm not happy he leaves," the Portuguese said. "I would love the Premier League to keep always the best players.

"I think he has more than enough quality to play in the Premier League. In spite (of the fact) he's my opponent, I feel sorry that he's leaving."

Mourinho even cheekily suggested he could land Gerrard on loan - in a deal similar to Manchester City's signing of Chelsea hero Frank Lampard.

When the Chelsea boss was asked if he could persuade Gerrard to stay in English football, Mourinho told the BBC: "Or to get him on loan."
