The United boss locks horns with the Frenchman on Monday when the Gunners head to Old Trafford in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

And speaking ahead of the clash, Van Gaal took time to praise Wenger for his longevity at the club, with the 65-year-old now in his 18th season in the top job.

“In my opinion [what he has done] is amazing," Wenger said.

"It can only be in England, I believe, where managers are so long committed with one club.

"It shows how much he can mean to a club. I like that – like Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger – I think it's fantastic that you can do that.”

Looking ahead to the game itself, Van Gaal added: "I think if we beat them it is a big blow for them but if they beat us it is a big blow for us.

"It is a very important game, not only for the FA Cup but also for the rat race.

"We have the support of our fans but Arsenal shall also bring a lot of fans. I hope we can give them a fantastic match."
