Hazard, 24, was handed last season’s PFA Player of the Year gong for his exploits in Chelsea’s title-winning campaign.

But his form in recent weeks mirrors the champions’ wretched results from the opening games of their title defence.

He has scored just once and missed from the spot in Wednesday’s Champions League win over Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv.

However, Mourinho has total faith in his pocket rocket, who will remain on penalty duty despite his European horror from 12 yards.

“He’s the best player in England,” the Chelsea boss insisted. “As I was saying the other day it’s not because [Wayne] Rooney doesn’t score goals for three weeks that he is not a fantastic player.

“And Eden is the best player in this country so it’s not because that performance or penalty or not scoring goals for three or four weeks that he is not the best.

“He is the best and will be the best again.

“I don’t know if it’s tomorrow or next week but one of these days he will be the man of the match.”

THE BEST: Jose Mourinho has defended Eden Hazard

John Terry was left on the bench for the midweek win as Mourinho set about freshening things up.

That call, coupled with Mourinho’s decision to substitute him at half-time against Manchester City last month, has plunged the club legend’s future into doubt.

But, like Hazard, he has his manager’s total support.

Mourinho said: “I think you have to look at the situation like this - last season he played every minute but two seasons ago he didn’t and three seasons ago even less. So what’s the problem?

“He has my total confidence. I trust him always and he’s one of my men so because he’s on the bench for one game or because I take him off at half time, nothing has changed.”

Chelsea’s early struggles have led to reports of rifts emerging and Mourinho falling out with his squad.

Steven Gerrard was on punditry duty for the Champions League game and he suggested there is “friction behind the scenes” - a charge that infuriated the Portuguese.

The 52-year-old said of Gerrard: “I like him very much, I have a good relationship with him. He does his job as a football player amazingly well but as a pundit he talks about something that is not true.

“I don’t have any problem with any of my players. You can try to find every answer for the bad results but the bad relations between myself and one player or even between the players.

“You can try to find any answer but you go for another one - the tactical side of it, my bad options, my bad changes, go for the weather.

“But I can promise you there are zero problems between me and my players.”

NO RIFT: Mourinho hit back at Steven Gerrard's claims

Chelsea’s hopes of retaining their league crown already appear to be hanging by a thread.

They are 11 points behind early pace-setters Manchester City and some pundits reckon the Blues could be knocked out of the race if they lose tomorrow’s lunchtime meeting with Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger’s men landed a hit on Mourinho by winning the Charity Shield in August.

And the chance of getting one over the Gunners is the Chelsea boss’ sole focus for now.

“I don’t go in that direction,” Mourinho said. “I just go in the direction of the match, tomorrow is a match I want to isolate from every context.

“Our fantastic record against Arsenal doesn’t matter. It doesn’t mater that for seven or eight matches they don’t beat Chelsea, it doesn’t matter that they beat us in the Charity Shield.

“It’s a match that I want to isolate from every possible context, it’s just Chelsea and Arsenal and it’s a match we want to win.

“If it’s a pre-season friendly against Arsenal we want to win and the Charity Shield is the same.”
