Jesse Lingard is reportedly a major doubt for Manchester United’s Premier League opener at Bournemouth today.

According to The Sun, the winger limped out of training on Friday with a damaged foot.

They claim his absence could mean a surprise reprieve for Juan Mata.

The Spaniard has been closely linked with a move away from Old Trafford in recent weeks.

Jose Mourinho has pledged to give striker Marcus Rashford more than enough first-team action this season to ensure he continues to be a candidate for England.

He said: “I see all of what is said about Rashford. I like him a lot. The England squad is Sam’s decision but he is one of my important players.

“He’ll play a lot, then Sam has to make a decision. Rashford is a young boy with a lot to learn. There will be ups and downs and we will have to support him. But potentially he’s a very good player and a good professional in the way he lives.“And players who aren’t in the team at the start of the season will see their frustration end once we get to September, when the League Cup and Europa League start.”

Meanwhile Mourinho has also dismissed Memphis Depay’s flash image and insisted he is a player with a future under him at Old Trafford.

Depay had a disappointing first season at United, after arriving in a deal which eventually could cost the club £31m.

“Of course I want him to be a part of my squad,” said Mourinho. “Last season was last season and I don’t want to go into that too much.“But I watched him at PSV many times and having THAT player in mind, I want to keep him.

“At the World Cup two years ago he was a very young kid. Now, I want to try everything with him.“You can see him driving a nice car and you think, ‘This guy is not thinking about football’. But that is not the case.“The kid thinks about football. He suffers because he is frustrated with what happened and he lost confidence."I believe in him as a good boy, a good kid, a good professional – and I don’t care what people think. He will be back."
