COMING GOOD: Wenger backs Walcott to have a good season

The England winger has been inconsistent throughout his Arsenal career, but showed flashes of his best yesterday as Arsenal comprehensively outplayed Chelsea 3-0 at the Emirates.

The 27-year-old scored Arsenal’s second yesterday in a commanding performance, and Wenger says he’s not surprised Walcott’s finding his feet.

“He’s committed, he does his job offensively and defensively and he’s still dangerous,” Wenger told Arsenal Player.

“I like what he’s doing at the moment. He’s an intelligent player with a strong character.

“I told you before the season started that you would see a different Walcott this year.”

Arsenal have recovered from a shaky start to the season and now have won four on the bounce.

And Wenger’s pleased with all aspects of his side’s play now they’re on a role.

“I’m a very happy man because we produced the quality of football we want to produce,” he added.

“If I had told you that before the game, we would all have signed up.

“That’s why we all love the game - because it can give you this kind of spectacle that you want to see. That should give us the taste to want more and hopefully it will.

“The intensity [to our display] is a little bit linked with belief.

“When you have a doubt in your mind, you’re hesitant and that’s what I could feel against Southampton. We redressed it well against Hull, at Nottingham Forest and again here.”
