England’s leading goalscorer returned to his childhood team by signing a two-year-deal on Sunday (July 9).

And he showed just how much he loves the club by sharing a photo of him as a boy in his first Everton pyjamas.

The former Manchester United captain has taken no time at all to settle in.

The 31-year-old started for the Toffees in their pre-season friendly against Kenyan side Gor Mahia FC today (July 13).

He picked up the ball 34 minutes into the first half, before turning around and seeing plenty of space to have a crack at goal – despite being some 30 yards out.

His sublime shot then sailed past the opposition keeper and into the net.

Rooney later tweeted: Great start to the pre-season. Special thanks to the fans supporting us in Tanzania today."

While it was the perfect debut, United fans weren’t all that happy.

“Every single goal Wayne Rooney scores for Everton is a lesson to be learned for Man Utd,” one wrote.

Another simply added: “Can we re-sign him?”

And a third commented: “Please come back.”

Rooney’s official Premier League return for Everton will be at home to Stoke City on August 12.

But before then fans will be hoping he can fire them to Europa League success after Everton were drawn against Slovakia's Ruzomberok or Brann of Norway in the third qualifying round of the competition.

He will wear Romelu Lukaku’s number 10 shirt, after the Belgian hitman completed his £75m move to the Red Devils.

David James exclusively told Daily Star Online Everton may have used Lukaku to lure players to the club before selling him to Man Utd.

And today, the Toffees were told they will have to stump up £50m to land Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea.
