Philippe Coutinho is a top target for Barcelona

The La Liga giants are working on a deal to try and persuade the Kop to part with their brilliant Brazilian.

But Jurgen Klopp is resisting all attempts to take Coutinho from Anfield.

Liverpool are refusing to negotiate a potential transfer and Barcelona have started thinking about a Plan B.

The Catalans are weighing up a move for Arsenal's contract rebel Mesut Ozil in case a deal can't be done for Coutinho.

Spanish outlet Don Balon say Barca think they can sign Ozil for around £53m.

The German playmaker is in the last 12 months of his contract at The Emirates.

He will be able to discuss a free transfer to clubs outside of England from January 1 2018.

But Barcelona want to strengthen this summer and will have to spend to get him out of north London.

Mesut Ozil is in the last 12 months of his contract

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has insisted he wants to keep Ozil and fellow rebel Alexis Sanchez this season and risk losing them on a free next summer rather than cashing in now.

And he claims that it is a great situation that six first-team players are out of contract next summer.

He said: "Not an issue. I think it’s an ideal situation."

"Why? Because everyone has to perform.

"Am I happy for Ozil to be in the last 12 months? Yes, I think in the future you will see it more and more.

"Why? Because the transfers are so high even for normal players, you will see more and more players going into the final year of the contract because no club will want to pay the amount demanded.

"I’m convinced in the next ten years it will become usual."
