Real Madrid beat Man Utd 2-1 in the Super Cup

Real lifted the UEFA Super Cup trophy tonight after beating United 2-1.

Romelu Lukaku scored on his competitive debut but it came after goals from Casemiro and Isco with United unable to find that elusive equaliser.

Real completed the La Liga and Champions League double last season and are odds-on favourites to once again defend their European title after also winning the trophy in 2016.

And United legend Scholes was hugely impressed with the level at which Zinedine Zidane's side performed against his former club.

"There is a lot of work for every team in Europe to match that team," Scholes said on BT Sport.

"I thought for long periods of that game the passing and moving and just the way they moved the ball, the simplicity, the movement was sensational at times.

"United did well to dig in and stay in the game.

Paul Scholes believes Manchester United are a long way behind Real Madrid

"(Marouane) Fellaini was a handful when he came on, (Marcus) Rashford was a handful.

"Towards the end Madrid did look like they were tiring a little bit but Manchester United are a bit further down the line in preparation.

"There's a long way to get to that level."
