Les Ferdinand thinks Tottenham have no need to worry about a lack of signings this summer

The former centre forward is a legend at both clubs, who meet tomorrow at St James’ Park, and wants to see the pair of them do well this season.

But the man affectionately known as ‘Sir Les’ has contrasting views on their respective prospects.

Spurs full-back Danny Rose said last week that his club needs to splash the cash and sign two or three top players.

That outburst earned him a fine of £130,000 as chairman Daniel Levy moved to clamp downon potential unrest.

And Ferdinand (right) said: “Everyone is going on about the fact Spurs have not signed anyone but Daniel Levy is known for doing his business in the last week of the window.

“So I’m sure Spurs will bring in someone. If you look at their team, though, it isn’t broken so why fix it?

“They don’t need to bring in someone just for the sake of doing it. If they sign someone it’s got to be a player who is going to add to what they’ve got.

“If you look at the players they brought in last season, you have to ask yourself what impact did they have?

“There were not too many who really impacted on the side last season. It was the boys who were already there who did it. There is a team there and it is hard to improve it.

“I understand everyone saying they need to bring in a striker but Son Heung-min scored 20-odd last season.

“If you look at the rest of the team, they let Kyle Walker go to Man City but at £50million that was good business.

“Kieran Trippier came in at the back end of last season and Walker was struggling to get back in the side.

“They were under no pressure to sell but did so as it was a good deal.”

Ferdinand sees things a bit differently when it comes to Newcastle.

The QPR Director of Football said: “They’ve come up and the fans – and manager – are looking for them to spend money, so I can understand the frustration of Rafa Benitez. You need a bit of quality in the Premier League.”

But Ferdinand, 50, has warned Spurs about their visit to Newcastle tomorrow.

He added: “I know what that stadium can be like on the first day of the season and I’m sure it will be jumping.

“It won’t be an easy ride. The last time Spurs were there they lost 5-1 and it was after Newcastle had been relegated!”

Ferdinand was interviewed by the Daily Star Sunday at a FWA Live event to raise money for the London Fire Relief Fund, following the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
