Stoke are set to complete the loan signing of Jese Rodriguez

Rodriguez wants to play for Mark Hughes according to Guillem Balague after starting just one match last season at the French club.

The 24-year-old was on loan at Las Palmas for the second half of the campaign, after failing to settle in Paris following his move from Real Madrid.

Jese failed to make an impression under Unai Emery and did look set for a move to Italian club Fiorentina until this latest development.

And Balague thinks the move to the Premier League could spark a revival in Rodriguez.

“Jese’s one-year loan move to Stoke is going to be announced very soon,” the Spanish football expert told Sky Sports.

“Jese’s progression has stopped in recent years with injuries, and an infection he had while he was recuperating.

“That meant his progression has stopped, there’s no doubt about it.

“So, I think he wants to test himself in a place where he will be playing and where he is going to be challenged.”

Former Spanish Under-21 international Rodriguez has struggled with injury, including a tear of the ACL in his right knee in 2014.

But Balague thinks he could still play a big part at Stoke if he can adjust to the physicality of the Premier League.

He added: “Four or five years ago, he wanted to win the Ballon d’Or, but those injuries have altered his mentality and physique.

“It’s a risk signing him because he needs the love of everybody, but he can play as a centre-forward or a winger and has talent in abundance.

“I can’t wait to see him in the Premier League and see him trying when things don’t go his way.”
