Starsport can exclusively reveal that the 27-year-old is headed to the North East for a medical today ahead of an expected £5m switch to join the Toon.

He spent the majority of last season on loan at Deportivo La Coruna after falling out of favour with Mark Hughes at Stoke, scoring six goals in 24 appearances in all competitions.

But the former Real Madrid man returned to the midlands during pre-season, looking impressive as he scored four goals.

The Spaniard scored a beauty for Stoke during preseason

Arguably the most impressive of the lot came during the Potters’ 4-2 loss against St Pauli.

Latching on to a loose bouncing ball on the edge of the area, the Spaniard slammed home a curling effort into the top corner to fire Stoke back into the game.

His impending move to Newcastle has caused a stir among the two fanbases, leaving Stoke supporters confused at the decision to offload him and Magpies fans delighted at the acquisition.

“Shame Joselu didn't get an actual chance, another victim to Hughes' horrific management,” wrote one Stoke fan online.

But one Newcastle fan said: “Gamez, Manquillo, Merino, Ayoze, Joselu, Rafa. #NUFC's Spanish contingent continues to grow.

“Hopefully he can kick start his career here.”

Newcastle are set to be without captain Jonjo Shelvey for three games after the hot-headed midfielder was shown a straight red card for stamping on Dele Alli during his side’s 2-0 loss to Tottenham.
