Liverpool transfer news: Virgil van Dijk will sign for the Reds, says Joleon Lescott

That’s the verdict of former Premier League star Joleon Lescott.

Van Dijk wants to join Liverpool from Southampton, while Chelsea and Manchester City are keen on the Dutch star too.

Ex-Everton and City centre-back Lescott was quizzed on the transfer saga on Sky Sports this morning.

And he expects Van Dijk to get his way and link-up with the Reds before the closure of the window at 11pm on August 31.

“I’m sure if there is to be an agreement to be reached, I’m sure it’s going to be with Liverpool,” he said on Premier League Daily.

“If he’s available there is other top teams that are interested in him.

“But I think it was documented earlier in the window that he wanted to play for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool."

Liverpool shipped three goals in their Premier League opener at Watford on Saturday.

Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool will get the Southampton man, says Lescott

The Reds looked vulnerable at set-pieces, but Lescott doesn’t think Jurgen Klopp is short of decent options at the back.

“I don’t know if they’ve got problems, maybe set piece issues, I don’t think they’ve got centre-back problems,” Lescott added.

“I did see a few games of Liverpool’s last season and I did like the partnership between them (Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren).

“In terms of Van Dijk, I think he is one of the best.

“I see a lot of similarities with Vincent Kompany, obviously Vincent has been touted as probably the best centre-half when he’s fit and consistent throughout the season.

"I think Virgil is up with him as well.”

Van Dijk hasn't played for Southampton since injuring his foot against Leicester in January.
