The Serbian midfielder was sold by the champions for £40m and he made a big impression on his home debut against West Ham on Sunday.

Matic was up for the move to Old Trafford which saw him link-up with former manager Jose Mourinho.

And Lescott was chuffed Chelsea didn’t deny the player his wish of a transfer, despite the deal directly benefiting a title rival.

“I was pleased that Chelsea let him go to Man United,” he said on Sky Sports' Premier League Daily.

Nemanja Matic: Chelsea right to let star join Man Utd - Lescott

“I was surprised they let him go at all but I was glad to see a team didn’t restrict him from going to a team he wanted to go to, even if it is a rival.

“In terms of business done I think Manchester United is probably the best.

“They’ve probably bought the players they needed the most more than any other team.

Nemanja Matic: Man Utd star shone on his debut against West Ham

“Matic proved that at the weekend.

“Even though Romelu got two goals, he was an outstanding performer and I’m sure he will be that consistent throughout the season.”

Jermaine Jenas thinks Matic's 'immense' display in the 4-0 win over West Ham should send shivers down the spine of United's rivals.

“I thought Matic was the standout performer, he was immense,” the former Tottenham man said on Match of the Day 2 at the weekend.

“It freed up Pogba, he played a little bit higher up the pitch.

“If this is sign of things to come from Mourinho and this midfield partnership then the rest of the Premier League should be running scared.

“Both of them were so powerful and immense.”
