The Liverpool defender scored his first goal for the Reds on his European debut as Jurgen Klopp’s men claimed a 2-1 win over Hoffenheim in the first leg of their Champions League play-off on Tuesday.

Alexander-Arnold, 18, curled a first-half free-kick over the wall to mark his first game on the continent.

What’s next for the talented right-back remains to be seen, but he has already achieved so much in a short space of time.

Alexander-Arnold made his Reds debut last term to complete his boyhood dream of playing for the Reds before a further 11 appearances.

He has continued to impress Kop boss Jurgen Klopp over pre-season and now, with Nathaniel Clyne injured, has been first pick for the right-back slot so far this season.

And he marked his first appearance in Europe with a goal.

“It is indescribable to be honest,” he said. “Special in so many different ways for me personally and I've definitely ticked the box off (with the goal).

“At first I didn't know it was going to go in but it was well placed and I thought it was a good free-kick and I was happy it went in.

“I've been practising free-kicks but I didn't think the senior players would let me take it to be honest but in the end they did and I stepped up and scored and did well for the team.”

The goal will only add to the spotlight on the young talent who made his full debut for the Reds last season.

Many on Merseyside know all about him with former Kop captain Steven Gerrard even claiming he would be a “beauty” for the Reds.

Gerrard, who is now Liverpool’s Under-18s boss, was also full of praise for the defender in his role as a TV pundit during the game on Tuesday night.

“It's always good to get compliments from your idol and I am hoping to live up to his words,” said Alexander-Arnold. “It is always good to have his backing and support.”

Living up to Gerrard’s praise at Liverpool is a challenge in itself.

But with such praise and high hopes comes pressure and the need to fulfil potential with a lot of eyes watching.

But Alexander-Arnold is only thinking about Saturday’s clash with Crystal Palace in the Premier League though.

“I don't tend to think about it,” added the right back. “I just try to go to Melwood every day and try to fight for my position for the weekend.

“That's what I'll be doing on Wednesday because you can't take for granted you are going to play again and you have to try to keep your spot and that is what I am trying to go and do this week.”
