Manchester City are closing in on a £25m deal for Jonny Evans

Guardiola has seen an initial £18m bid turned down but is confident of landing the defender with an improved offer.

The Spanish boss is keen to add defensive cover to his squad and has made no secret of his desire to land a central defender.

French outcast Eliaquim Mangala has been told he is surplus to requirements and is closing in on a move to Inter Milan.

Etihad bosses still have reservations about the chances of Vincent Kompany remaining fit all season and Guardiola is chasing an extra defender.

He wants the option of playing with three at the back this season and has identified Evans as a potential answer.

The Baggies have rejected two bids from Leicester for Evans this summer before rebuffing City’s approach.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis has made Evans his club captain this season following Darren Fletcher’s departure to Stoke.

He is desperate to keep him at the Hawthorns but knows a £25m bid would be difficult to turn down as the Northern Ireland star is keen a move to the Etihad.

Evans, 29, doesn’t fit the profile of the other big-name targets Guardiola has landed this summer.

Guardiola has spent almost £210m on the likes of Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker and Bernardo Silva as he looks to win the Premier League title.

Ad he is also confident of landing Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in a £60m deal.

It remains to be seen what City fans make of Guardiola’s interest in Evans considering he spent almost a decade across town with bitter rivals Manchester United.
