Man Utd don't have any superstar players - Ian McGarry

That’s the verdict of The Transfer Window podcast guest and former Fleet Street journalist Ian McGarry.

He says Jose Mourinho’s side are missing the sort of eye-catching talent the club has boasted in the past.

“I look at this team and don't see a player who is going to get me off my seat.

“Pogba is a very functional midfielder who happens to have a great streak of talent in him to do things we wouldn't expect from someone of his physical stature or youth.

“I think Lukaku is a brilliant nuisance to opposition defences. He's got a good first touch and his Premier League scoring record is there for all to see.

“I don't see a David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, Andy Cole.

"I don't see a player in this Man United team last season or for the last three seasons who is a genuine superstar.

“If Jose Mourinho, who after the Europa League final talked about the triumph for the pragmatist over the poet and the romance of football is not something he cared for, if Jose Mourinho is going to pay some kind of homage to the great United teams of the past, Gareth Bale is your man to bring in.”

Mourinho admitted earlier this summer he’d launch a bid for Bale if he thought he was available.

But he’s since conceded the Welshman will be staying at Real after featuring against his side in the European Super Cup.

United could now wait until January to make their next signing.
