And according to The Independent, the Red Devils are already looking at plans for after he hangs up his boots.
United are likely to offer Ibrahimovic fresh terms until the end of the season as he aims to be back by January.
However, Mourinho is keen for the experienced hitman to stay in Manchester beyond his playing days.
The Portuguese apparently sees Ibrahimovic as a similar figure to former Chelsea forward Didier Drogba in being able to offer advice and expertise to United's squad.
As a result, The Independent add Ibrahimovic could eventually be set for a coaching role.
And the prospect has been discussed in preliminary contract talks.

And Mourinho feels he could serve as a bridge between manager and players at Manchester United in the future.
Ibrahimovic, though, has no intention of retiring soon as he is eager to get back playing again quickly, having seen Lukaku score twice in United's opening 4-0 Premier League win over West Ham on Sunday.
