Simon Mignolet knows Liverpool have to improve their defence

The Kop threatened to ruin a good night’s work in their Champions League qualifier with Hoffenheim by giving away a soft goal on Tuesday.

Their commanding 2-0 lead was reduced to 2-1 heading into the second leg against the Bundesliga side next week.

They conceded three goals against Watford at the weekend, squandering two precious Premier League points in their 3-3 draw.

Jurgen Klopp’s defence has come in for criticism from all angles and Mignolet admits it’s hard to ignore.

He said: “We have the qualities and our natural game will be attacking, we know we have to fill that in with a really defensive spirit.

“We know that is where we have to improve.

“We are not blind.

“Everybody knows it in the dressing room, but there is no point throwing everything away.

“You cannot change a natural footballing side that goes forward, but we know we have to mix that in with a good defensive, aggressive spirit to make sure they don’t score the goals.”
