Javier Hernandez's two goals at Southampton couldn't help West Ham earn any points

The Saints scored a stoppage-time penalty to beat the Hammers 3-2 at St Mary’s yesterday.

And while the former Manchester United striker got off the mark for West Ham, it was a disappointing day on the whole for the east London club.

A serious-looking injury to Winston Reid, two penalties conceded and a Marko Arnautovic red card all contributed to a forgetful afternoon.

While West Ham fought back bravely during the contest, it was all in vain.

And Cresswell couldn’t help but acknowledge the Hammers are still pointless in the Premier League.

On Hernandez and his first goals for West Ham, Cresswell told Starsport: “Yes, of course he’s really happy about it.

“But at the end of the day it’s all about getting points on the board.”

Reid penned a new six-year contract at the London Stadium just yesterday.

But he was unable to celebrate his new deal after being stretchered off at St Mary’s half an hour before kick-off, as Angelo Ogbonna replaced him in the backline.

And when asked about the seriousness of his defensive team-mate’s blow, Cresswell confirmed: “I think it was his calf as he’s pulled up in the warm up.

“It’s obviously not a good situation for us.

“But these things happen in football and hopefully he’ll recover quickly.”

While Reid is set for a spell on the sidelines, star playmaker Manuel Lanzini will return just at the right time against Newcastle next Saturday following a knee injury.

And Cresswell is ready to welcome him back, adding: “He was arguably our best player last season, so of course he’s been a big miss for us.”

Starsport understands the Argentina international, who has attracted interest from Liverpool, is in line for a new improved contract soon.

But West Ham’s EFL Cup second round tie at Cheltenham on Wednesday is likely to come too soon for Lanzini.

Reid’s calf problem will all but certainly rule him out, while Hernandez is likely to be given a break.

With Cresswell back in Slaven Bilic’s first XI, Arthur Masuaku should start against the League Two side.
