Chelsea star Thibaut Courtois commented on Tottenham's Wembley atmosphere

Spurs hooked up a drummer to the PA system in a bid to boost the noise of the 73,587 crowd for Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea.

But the idea fell flat after Premier League officials told them to pull the plug during the first half.

Although the club are not in trouble there will be no repeat performance in their next ‘home’ game against Burnley on Sunday.

But Chelsea goalkeeper Courtois reckons it didn’t work anyway.

He said: “They have the capacity now to bring a lot of fans into the stadium. If they make more noise it would be better for them.

“But if you have to put some noise over the speakers to make some atmosphere I don’t think it is working very well.

“In the second half they were pressing and 70,000 people started to wake up. There is obviously more than the 40,000 at White Hart Lane.

“The only difference is that they are more separate from the pitch than at White Hart Lane when you feel more pressure and the pitch is smaller, which is probably better for them.”

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte warned after the game that Spurs will find it tough to play at Wembley, with visiting teams raising their game.

And Courtois agreed, saying: “Wembley is an amazing stadium but these stadiums make you want to play even better. It is like a Champions League game where you can rise above yourself.

“I think those stadiums make that and all the teams that come here, instead of being impressed they will give more, so for Spurs, it won’t be easy.”

Chelsea have now beaten Spurs four times in a row at Wembley, including last season’s FA Cup semi-final, and Courtois claims the champions have a mental edge over their London rivals.

He said: “I think we coped well with them in the FA Cup and it is a little advantage we can have mentally over them because we won here in the semi-final against them as well so that is good.”

Courtois also claims Chelsea have answered their critics after their shock defeat to Burnley in their opening – and that their best is yet to come.

Chelsea won against Tottenham despite being without the injured Eden Hazard, the banned Cesc Fabregas and Gary Cahill, and with players like Tiemoue Bakayoko and Alvaro Morata not yet fully match fit.

They also still hope to make up to four signings before the transfer window closes a week on Thursday and Courtois said: “We play with some different players today than we did in May.

“Eden still has to come back, Bakayoko played his first game so physically he is not at this best but it was a very good game to start for him.

“We will try to work hard and maybe after the international break we know what is our full squad and we can build on that, play an amazing year and win trophies by the end of the season.”
