At least that’s the verdict of La Liga journalist Filippo Ricci, who reckons the Reds’ valuation of the playmaker is too high.

Coutinho has emerged as Barcelona’s top target following the world-record sale of Neymar to Paris St-Germain two weeks ago.

And the 25-year-old handed in a transfer request - which was rejected by Liverpool chiefs - in a bid to force through a move.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have knocked back offers worth £72m, £90m and £118m from Barcelona for Coutinho.

Filippo Ricci claimed on Twitter that Liverpool are asking for too much for Philippe Coutinho

The Sunday Express claimed Liverpool would consider a bid around the £140m mark for the former Inter Milan ace.

Ricci, who covers Spanish football for Gazzetta dello Sport, reckons Barcelona should end their pursuit though.

On Twitter, he wrote: "I have no doubt: for the figures Borussia [Dortmund] and Liverpool are seeking, Barca should abandon plans for [Ousmane] Dembele and Coutinho."

On Monday, Guillem Balague claimed Liverpool’s decision not to accept Barcelona’s third offer would see them go after other players.

He told Sky Sports: "Barcelona set a deadline of 7pm on Sunday for Liverpool to accept their third for Coutinho.

Barcelona have had three bids for transfer target Philippe Coutinho knocked back by Liverpool

"And that they would retract the offer if it was not accepted.

"Liverpool have not even answered, so that should mean that's the end of that.

"Lodging a sizeable third bid (or who knows, even a fourth or fifth) for Coutinho could help Barca negotiate better deals for other targets, though.

"They may be able offer a little less for their targets now - Ousmane Dembele, Jean Michael Seri and their third target, Angel Di Maria from Paris Saint-Germain."

Coutinho is yet to play for Liverpool this afternoon after picking up a back injury.
