At least that’s the verdict of journalist Kevin Palmer amid speculation the Reds still want the Holland international.

Van Dijk has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most in-demand defenders since joining Saints from Celtic two years ago.

And this summer he’s been heavily linked with a move away from St. Mary’s with a queue of top flight rivals keen on him.

Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal have been credited with varying degrees of interest in signing Van Dijk.

Kevin Palmer revealed on Twitter that Virgil Van Dijk is unlikely to join Liverpool this summer

And Anfield seemed like the 26-year-old’s most likely destination before accusations of tapping up were levelled against Liverpool in June.

Jurgen Klopp is apparently eyeing Van Dijk as he looks to bolster his shaky backline.

Although Palmer, who writes for the Sunday World, Irish Independent and Yahoo Sport, reckons a deal is not on the cards.

Liverpool are keen to add Southampton star Virgil Van Dijk to their defensive ranks this summer

On Twitter, a fan said: "Maybe I'm naive, but I just think Klopp only wants VvD and [Naby] Keita. Clubs won't sell, so begrudgingly must wait."

And Palmer replied: "Be surprised if he gets Van Dijk at this stage. Saints don't like Liverpool too much!"

Away from transfer business, Liverpool are back in action against Hoffenheim on Wednesday night.

Klopp’s men go into the Champions League play-off showdown 2-1 up on aggregate following last week’s clash in Germany.

Liverpool then return to Premier League action on Sunday when they travel to Liverpool.
