Liverpool and Juventus are both eyeing a £16.5m swoop for Schalke star Benedikt Howedes

Liverpool have been after a new central defender throughout the summer but their much-publicised pursuit of Virgil van Dijk has hit a number of issues.

A deal for the Southampton star now appears highly unlikely and Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is assessing his options.

Italian outlet Transfermarketweb claim Liverpool are interested in versatile Schalke star Howedes.

It is said Juve are also keen on the 29-year-old Germany international, who is contracted to the Bundesliga outfit until June 2020.

The World Cup winner could be tempted by a fresh challenge having spent his entire career with Schalke, playing close to 350 games for the club.

The reports claim sources in both the UK and Italy have confirmed the interest from Liverpool and Juventus.

And Howedes could reportedly be available for just £16.5m, a bargain by this summer’s standards.

Liverpool’s defence has come in for scrutiny already this season, especially following their 3-3 draw at Watford on the opening day of the season.

Howedes would bring a wealth of top level experience to Anfield and would be able to link up with his former Schalke team-mate Joel Matip.

One vital factor in Liverpool’s transfer hopes could be the outcome of their match against Hoffenheim tonight.

Klopp and co must see off the German side to make it into the Champions League proper and boost their hopes of completing high-profile deals before next Thursday’s deadline.
