Tottenham star Davinson Sanchez joined for a record £42m

The 21-year-old Colombian defender will face Burnley tomorrow if his work permit comes through in time after his move from Ajax.

But he has been given a taste of what to expect by his new boss, himself a renowned tough-tackling Argentinean defender.

Pochettino said: “He has all the characteristics for success here.

“I challenged him in training this week. We were playing a box and he was inside and the ball was in the air and me, bam, and he falls, I’ve got the ball!

“We always try to find the profile of the person and I think it was a massive possibility when we knew about the chance to sign him.

“It’s a massive opportunity because we believe he will be one of the best centre-backs in the world in the future. That is why we made the effort to try to sign him.”

Sanchez’s arrival has cast fresh doubt over Toby Alderweireld’s future.

The Belgian defender is stalling over a new contract as he looks to double his £50,000-a-week wages.

But Pochettino insists he is going nowhere and said: “It not related. Today, I was talking for one hour with Toby. He is so happy here.

“The club now is so busy trying to add more quality to the team. It’s true that Davinson is more competition for our centre-backs but it can only be good.

“No doubt, when the window finishes, Daniel Levy will try to work and make happy every single player of the club.”

Tottenham will be looking to get up and running at Wembley just 24 hours after rugby league’s Challenge Cup final is played at the stadium.

Pochettino played down concerns about the playing surface, adding: “I’m not concerned because we have unbelievable people working.

“We have unbelievable groundsmen and the Wembley groundsmen, they’re working very close with each other, to be sure we will find Sunday in the condition we need to play.”
