Liverpool have agreed a £20m deal with Crystal Palace for Mamadou Sakho

That's the claim made by journalist Dominic Fifield who believes the defender is set for an Anfield exit.

He tweeted: "Told deal worth initial £20m agreed in principle by #cpfc and #lfc for Mamadou Sakho.

"Could rise to original asking price (£30m) with add-ons.

"All pending a medical of course, which would presumably be very stringent."

Sakho spent the second half of last season on loan at Selhurst Park.

But his spell away from Anfield was cut short when he suffered a severe injury towards the end of the campaign.

Liverpool are prepared to let Sakho leave as they continue to chase Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

But former Palace manager Sam Allardyce thinks the Frenchman could have been the answer for Jurgen Klopp's side.

He told talkSPORT: "So they are not going to give Mama Sakho a chance to resurrect his career at Liverpool?

"He was fabulous for me. He was outstanding. One of the reasons we stayed up at Palace was Mama's defensive qualities.

Mamadou Sakho is on his way to Crystal Palace

"In the time he spent with us he turned around what was a very leaky defence.

"When he arrived with us, he had been with the [Liverpool] under-23s the entire season and, with great credit to him, he came straight into the side performing at the highest level. He was very good."

Palace have had an awful start to the season, losing all three of their matches so far.

The arrival of Sakho will be a boost for new manager Frank de Boer who takes his side to Burnley after the international break.
