At least that what’s footballer-turned-pundit Jamie Redknapp has suggested as rumours of a potential switch continue to swirl.

Van Dijk has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most in-demand players since joining Saints from Celtic two years ago.

And a move to Anfield appeared a formality before Liverpool were accused of tapping the Holland international up in June.

That situation forced the Reds to take a step back from proceedings - although Jurgen Klopp remains keen to get him on-board this summer.

Jamie Redknapp compared Virgil Van Dijk's situation to that of Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho

Former Liverpool star Redknapp had his say on the Van Dijk saga on Tuesday night’s edition of The Debate on Sky Sports.

And he revealed the murmurs are Southampton are determined to keep hold of the 26-year-old ahead of deadline day.

Redknapp said: "I remember doing The Debate show three weeks ago, four weeks ago now, and we were talking about [how] I thought it was a certainty that Liverpool would get Van Dijk. But they are digging their heels in. I’m hearing that there’s no way they’re gonna sell him.

Jamie Redknapp says Southampton are determined to keep Virgil Van Dijk at St. Mary's

"It’s a nightmare for the player. It’s a little bit like the Coutinho one because now we’re talking about two players that are getting an opportunity. [Philippe] Coutinho wants to go to Barcelona. It’s hard to begrudge anyone doing that. When you [Ian Wright] was at Crystal Palace, you had the chance to go to Arsenal, you know. And it’s the same with Van Dijk wanting to go to Liverpool, or wherever it is, Chelsea. Everyone wants to better themselves, in whatever walk of life you’re from.

"It’s a really interesting one now and I’m looking forward to seeing how these all figure out. The fact that Liverpool are bidding for [Thomas] Lemar and believe they’ve got a good chance of getting him tells me that maybe [the] Coutinho one could still be alive and they are selling him but they want to get in a player before they end up selling him to Barcelona."

Whether Liverpool will manage to persuade Southampton to let Van Dijk leave before tomorrow’s 11pm deadline remains to be seen.

It’s likely to take a world-record defender fee of more than £70m to secure his services if St. Mary's chiefs do alter their stance.
