Chris Gunter feels Aaron Ramsey is being made a scapegoat for Arsenal's woes this season

That is the view of his Wales international room mate Chris Gunter ahead of Saturday night’s vital World Cup qualifying clash against Austria.

Ramsey, subbed at half time at Liverpool on Sunday, was slammed by pundit Gary Neville and Gunners fans for his part in the 4-0 drubbing.

Gunter said: “Do I think Aaaron is made a scapegoat? Yes I do, and I’m not sure why.

“That’s my impression of what I get to hear about. Sometimes it does feel like that.

“There’s always this thing of people saying he was too attacking, well three weeks ago he was the best midfielder at getting into the box. You can’t have it both ways.

“It won’t bother him. This is a guy who a couple of months ago was scoring a winner in the FA Cup final and that was twice in three years.

“Maybe in Wales he is more appreciated. But it is no coincidence that whenever he has been injured and is back fit for Arsenal he is straight back in the team. The ones whose opinions matter, like his manager there, know his quality.”

Reading full back Gunter, who will be winning his 80th cap, says the team spirit in Chris Coleman’s side is the perfect way for any player to escape whatever troubles they are going through at club level.

He said: “It’s something we are good at as a squad. I remember a few years ago when I was at Forest and he was at Arsenal and we both played on the Sunday and Wales met up that evening.

“We had lost to West Ham at home 4-1 and I think that was the day Arsenal lost to United 8-2 or something.

“We got into the room, looked at each other, and within 20 minutes you are with your mate and it starts to melt away.

“I’m not saying the results were fine, but I’m sure it is the same for everybody when you’ve had a bad day you feel better with people you are comfortable with.”
