That’s despite the Red Devils and Arsenal missing out on a £55m deal for the Monaco man earlier this summer.

Liverpool have made several offers this week but Duncan Castles thinks Jose Mourinho could still enter the race to sign the France international.

“Monaco's asking price when Manchester United and Arsenal were interested in the player was €60m (£55m),” he told The Transfer Window podcast.

“That interest remains from Manchester United, but now they've got Liverpool on the hook and making offers the price is gonna go up beyond that level in a classic Monaco ‘you want one of our players we are gonna squeeze the maximum amount of money out of you.’

“Which they've done better than any other team in the history of football this summer.”

Liverpool have been very busy this week, completing a deal for Naby Keita who will move to Anfield next summer from RB Leipzig.

They have also had a £40m bid accepted by Arsenal this evening for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

And the Reds are still wanting to add Lemar although they are determined to keep hold of Philippe Coutinho as Barcelona continue to chase their talisman.

Man Utd could still rival Liverpool for Thomas Lemar

United have made four additions to their squad this summer.

Mourinho has brought in Victor Lindelof, Nemanja Matic, Romelu Lukaku and the club has re-signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Lemar was impressive for Monaco last season, netting 14 times and providing 17 assists in all competitions.
