The Reds have had a busy summer, adding the likes of Dominic Solanke, Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Andy Robertson to their ranks.

They have also agreed a deal for Naby Keita who will move from RB Leipzig to Anfield next summer.

But the Liverpool Echo claim long-term interest in both Van Dijk and Lemar will not end in success this evening.

Jurgen Klopp was keen on Lemar but it appears Arsenal have trumped the Reds with a €100m bid.

And any deal is further complicated by the fact the Monaco star is on international duty with France and is set to play against Holland tonight.

Liverpool do have staff in Paris to conduct a medical but it now looks unlikely they will be needed.

Southampton are also increasingly confident of keeping hold of Van Dijk.

That’s despite the centre-back handing in a transfer request at the club.

Liverpool look to be losing in the race to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton

Van Dijk continues to train alone and Saints are determined to keep hold of one of their key players.

Liverpool went into the international break on the back of a dominant 4-0 win over title rivals Arsenal.

And it appears they will have to make do with the business they have already conducted this summer.
