The Liverpool owner doesn’t usually have much day-to-day contract with the goings on at Anfield.

But when it came to Coutinho this was a different matter.

The Independent say he was behind the FSG backed statement earlier this summer that laid down a marker insisting that the brilliant Brazilian was going nowhere.

Barcelona kept trying and their bids, coupled with the statement, prompted the forward to hand in a transfer request.

Philippe Coutinho is desperate to join Barcelona

But The Independent say Henry himself made the call that Coutinho would remain a Liverpool player whatever happened.

Henry was aware of the Brazilian’s back injury and that a meeting prior to the announcement had not gone the way Liverpool had hoped.

The Fenway Sports Group have decided to change the direction and perception of the Kop as a selling club and Coutinho was the first step.

He would not be allowed to follow the path Luis Suarez took when he joined Barcelona in 2014.

And, with the transfer window not going the way those at Anfield had hoped the Coutinho situation became non-negotiable.

Once the battle lines had been drawn Coutinho was never going to be allowed to leave no matter how hard Barcelona tried to prise him away.
