Marcus Rashford needs to be played through the middle

That is according to pundit and former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs.

Teenager Rashford burst onto the scene for United in early 2016, scoring on both his European and Premier League debuts.

He is now a familiar face for both United and England.

Giggs says the player reminds him of Arsenal and France legend Thierry Henry, with his long-term position being an out and out striker.

However, Rashford is being used down the flanks for club and country, rather than his preferred position of centre-forward.

And the former Wales international can't see the youngster getting much game-time through the middle of the park since the arrival of Romelu Lukaku and the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Old Trafford.

“Like you say, he’s not going to play centre-forward of United too often with Lukaku, Ibrahimovic as well," Giggs said on ITV ahead of England's clash with Malta.

“For England with (Harry) Kane, he’s not going to play centre-forward.”

“He can definitely play out wide, but eventually he’s going to be a No 9,” he added.

Rashford is becoming a fan-favourite at United

Rashford is one of the hottest young talents in football at present and failure to play him in his natural and favoured position could prove costly.

“I see similarities with Thierry Henry myself, he’s brilliant off the left," Giggs added.

“Even if he’s playing centre-forward, he drifts off to the left where you can take players on either side.

“But then, if he’s not played centre-forward a lot and all of a sudden Kane gets injured and you ask him to play up front, he can do it.”
