The Germany international has been criticised for his performances so far this season, and particularly in the wake of the Gunners’ 4-0 loss to Liverpool.

But Ozil hit back on Friday, releasing a statement which took aim at former Arsenal stars who are now pundits for their criticism of his displays.

And Marcotti thinks there is no doubt the 28-year-old has the quality to deliver for Arsene Wenger’s side.

“Well Joachim Low (Germany manager) does (trust him),” he told ESPN FC.

“If I felt I could get through to him and I could get the same kind of production and put the pieces around, absolutely (I would have Ozil in my team).

“It’s not like Mesut Ozil has turned into Robert Snodgrass overnight.

“He’s still a World Champion, he’s a starter for the World Champions.

“I think he deserves a modicum of respect.

“He’s obviously played badly but it’s not like he’s going to be off playing in the Venezuelan third division, no disrespect.”

Ozil could leave Arsenal for free next summer as he is in the final year of his current contract.

The Gunners have yet to tie down the Germany star to a new deal at the Emirates.
