The Atletico boss put pen to paper today on a new two-year deal.

His contract was due to expire at the end of this season, but the Argentinian’s future is now secure.

And his next major task is to ensure star forward Griezmann does not leave either.

Manchester United made him their No1 summer target before the France international agreed not to go.

Atletico were banned from signing players until January, which saw loyalty keep Griezmann in Madrid.

According to Spanish outlet Don Balon, Simeone’s first job will be to convince the 26-year-old to stick with him.

The Atletico manager would want Griezmann at the club at least until Simeone’s contract ends in 2020.

It is seen as a tough task, though, with United boss Jose Mourinho still very keen on signing the La Liga star.

Griezmann’s buyout clause has dropped back down to £92m, making him very much affordable in the modern market.

And the player will also apparently seriously consider a move next summer.

Don Balon add neither United or other clubs are likely go for Griezmann in January.

But it seems keeping the striker at Atletico beyond the end of this season will be a tall order for Simeone.

Tying down the manager, though, was considered more fundamental than keeping any Atletico player.
