Gareth Bale wants to win trophies

The Real Madrid superstar has been linked with a move to Old Trafford over the last few years.

Jose Mourinho tried to lure him again this time around but the Welshman remains in the Spanish capital.

Bale's star has faded somewhat in recent times and he admits the chance to be the main man at United is appealing.

But the glory at staying at Real outweighs the lure of ruling the red half of Manchester.

When quizzed about a switch to United, Bale said: "Be the star but win less? Well there's an argument for that.

"But I think the main thing, when you look back on your career, is that you look at your trophies.

"In the end that's probably the most important thing."

United tried to sign Bale from Southampton and then Tottenham.

But he has continued to evade them and that looks set to go on unless United can seriously challenge in Europe and the Premier League once again.

Bale will face former employers Tottenham for the first time this season when Real tackle the London side in Europe.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the Welsh star added: "I have a lot of great memories from my time there; some not so great as well but it was a big part of my journey.

"I love the club and still keep in touch with a lot of people there and the fans were incredible.

"I really enjoyed playing in those big European nights at White Hart Lane."
