The Toon boss reported back for work yesterday although his players had a day off following their 1-0 win at Swansea on Sunday.

And he will supervise training today having been handed a clean bill of health by his doctor.

Benitez picked up an infection after having a hernia operation last week and was ordered to stay at home.

It meant he had to postpone his return to work and miss the game at the Liberty Stadium, although he was in constant contact with his coaching team throughout the game.

Benitez, 57, has not seen most his players for a fortnight due to the international break.

He is set to arrange a series of one-to-one meetings with several of them including Dwight Gayle, who was the subject of a £15m bid from Fulham and Jack Colback, who has been named in Newcastle’s Premier League squad despite having been told to train with the Under-23s.

It was Benitez’s decision to stick with Mikel Merino against Swansea despite Jonjo Shelvey being available again following his three-match ban.

Shelvey played for the Under-23s on Monday night but may have to settle for a place on the bench again at home to Stoke on Saturday with Merino impressing at Swansea.
