United return to Europe’s top tournament this evening when they welcome Swiss champions Basel to Old Trafford for their opening Group A tie.

Lampard, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012, says Mourinho’s experience and knowhow will be vital to the Red Devils’ chances.

And the ex-England star expects United to at least reach the quarter-finals this term.

He told the London Evening Standard: "They will comfortably get through their group.

"With the squad they have now and how Mourinho is, you have to say they will get to the last eight at the very least.

Frank Lampard says Jose Mourinho will be key to Man Utd’s Champions League hopes

"Mourinho is their biggest asset. You saw it in the Europa League last season.

"They had a very average Premier League season, but when it came to the crunch in the cup games, Mourinho did the business.

"People will say it's the players that do it on the pitch, but you only have to look at how Mourinho set the team up against Ajax in the final - he was very pragmatic about it, dealt with their threats and worked on his team's strengths.

"Mourinho comes up with a way to win games."

Lampard also believes his old club Chelsea, who face Azerbaijani side Qarabag tonight, could claim glory in the elite competition.

Frank Lampard believes his old club Chelsea could claim Champions League glory

He added: "Everyone is aware, including [Blues boss] Antonio Conte, that it will be much harder to fight on both fronts, at home and in Europe, this season.

"But I think they have the potential to go all the way. Defensively, Chelsea are as good as anybody.

"When I look at the other English teams in the Champions League, some of them will struggle at the back, whereas Chelsea have a great base.

"After that it comes down to the attacking players being in form, so Chelsea have a lot to be optimistic about."
