That’s the verdict of player-turned-pundit Lee Dixon in the wake of the Reds’ 2-2 draw with Sevilla.

Liverpool were desperate to sign Van Dijk this summer and a switch appeared to be a formality until they were accused of tapping him up by Southampton.

Jurgen Klopp is expected to make a fresh move for the 26-year-old in 2018 as he looks to bolster his defence.

Liverpool’s frailty at the back was exposed on Wednesday night when they were held by Champions League group stage opponents Sevilla.

And Dixon says signing Van Dijk, as well as being more switched on, would strengthen Klopp’s side.

Speaking on ITV’s Champions League coverage, Dixon said: "There attacking prowess is brilliant, it has been all season - the way they hit you on the break.

"But playing against the better teams in the Champions League and in the Premier League they are going to have to tighten up at the back.

"I think signing one player of his quality would improve you, but it is a mentality thing.

"But I honestly don’t know what goes on when the ball goes out of play these days.

"The amount of games I see where the ball goes out of play, and that’s when you actually become alive as a midfielder, defensive midfield player or in defence, you switch on then because they’ve got the ball and they’ve got it off the pitch and they want the ball because they want to attack you, so why aren’t they switching on?

"The thing is that it’s not an effort or physical effort, but all you have to do is switch your brain on and walk into position because the ball is out of play."
